10 Great Places to Swim, Relax & Cool Off This Summer

One of the best parts about living in the Greater Rochester region is that you're never far from the water. Whether you're looking for a sandy beach on Lake Ontario, a quiet Finger Lakes shoreline, or a gorgeous state park for a day trip, there are plenty of places to cool off without traveling far from home.

We've rounded up 10 of our favorite beaches and natural swimming spots to help you make the most of summer.

Please note: Beach conditions, water quality, lifeguard availability, and swimming hours can change due to weather and other factors. Always check with the park or municipality before you head out. Facebook is a great place to check for their official updates, and many have automated phone lines too!

🌊 1. Ontario Beach Park (Charlotte)

If you're new to Rochester, this is the place to start. Ontario Beach Park has been a local summer tradition for generations, with a sandy beach, pier for strolling and fishing, playground, and beautiful views of Lake Ontario.

Don't forget to stop by Abbott's Frozen Custard after your swim—it's practically a Rochester summer tradition.

Highlights

  • Large sandy beach

  • Playground

  • Fishing pier - stroll to the end for amazing views!

  • Walking paths
  • The historic Dentzel Carousel (in its current location since 1905!)
  • Abbott's Frozen Custard nearby

πŸ– 2. Hamlin Beach State Park

If you're looking for one of the best beach days near Rochester, Hamlin Beach is hard to beat.

With wide stretches of sand, picnic areas, nature trails, and camping, it's perfect whether you're planning a quick afternoon or an entire weekend outdoors. Eddy Clark, agent on the Nathan Wenzel Team, says, "Our family loves Hamlin Beach Park. We have been going there for years and have wonderful memories there. I love riding my bike along the lakefront during the 4th of July. I like seeing and smelling all the different cultures picnicking with their families - all in harmony with each other. I think to myself, this is the real America!"

Highlights

  • Large sandy beach - 1 mile+ of lakefront

  • Picnic shelters/pavilions available for rent

  • Nature Center

  • Camping

  • Hiking and biking trails

πŸŒ… 3. Durand Eastman Beach

Often quieter than Ontario Beach, Durand Eastman offers a more relaxed Lake Ontario experience.

It's especially beautiful for sunrise walks, beachcombing, or simply enjoying the sound of the waves.

Highlights

  • Sandy shoreline

  • Walking trails nearby

  • Scenic views

  • Less crowded than some area beaches

πŸ’™ 4. Kershaw Park (Canandaigua Lake)

Located in the heart of downtown Canandaigua, Kershaw Park combines one of the Finger Lakes' nicest public swimming beaches with restaurants, shops, and ice cream just a short walk away.

It's an easy destination for a full summer day.

Highlights

  • Public swimming beach with changing rooms

  • Lifeguards (seasonal)

  • Playground, picnic tables, and swings for adults to enjoy the view

  • Just across the street from ice cream, breweries, and other dining and shopping options - a beautiful spot year-round!

  • FREE admission to swim (current as of August 2026)

🌞 5. Deep Run Beach (Canandaigua Lake)

Deep Run Beach offers another great public swimming area on Canandaigua Lake with a more laid-back atmosphere and plenty of space to relax.

Highlights

  • Public beach

  • Scenic lake views

  • Picnic area

  • Relaxed atmosphere - tends to be less crowded than Kershaw

🌿 6. Sandy Bottom Park (Honeoye Lake)

πŸ’‘ Local Tip

Want to avoid the biggest crowds?

Try visiting beaches on weekday mornings or after dinner on warm summer evenings. Not only will parking be easier, but you'll often enjoy a quieter experience—and some incredible sunsets over Lake Ontario.

🚫 Know Before You Go

Not every beautiful body of water is safe—or legal—for swimming.

Before jumping in, remember:

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas.

  • Check for water quality advisories before your visit.

  • Follow posted signs and lifeguard instructions.

  • Many rivers, waterfalls, and bays around Rochester are not designated for swimming, even if they look inviting. Reach out to your local representatives if like us, you want MORE legal swimming options in our area!
